2012 Academic Scholarship Donors 

 

 

The following list acknowledges the organizations and donors which make possible the following 2012 Tourism Cares Academic Scholarships. They are offered to undergraduate or graduate level students of primarily travel-and-tourism-related, or hospitality-related, programs of study.

 

ASTA SCHOLARSHIP FUND:

 

ASTA Alaska Airlines Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from Alaska Airlines.

 

ASTA American Express Travel Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from the American Express Company.

 

ASTA Arizona Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from the ASTA Arizona Chapter to encourage serious study in the field of travel and tourism.

 

ASTA Arnold Rigby Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Arnold Rigby, who pioneered the escorted tour business with his company Arnold Tours in Boston, Massachusetts.

 

ASTA Avis Budget Group Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from the Avis Budget Group.

 

ASTA Healy Scholarship

We do not have the donor history of this scholarship. 

 

ASTA Holland American Line Graduate Research Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from Holland America Line.

 

ASTA Joseph R. Stone Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of the late Joseph R. Stone, past President of ASTA.

 

ASTA Northern California Chapter- Richard Epping Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the ASTA Northern California Chapter and the Richard Epping family, in honor of Richard Epping, past President of the ASTA Northern California Chapter, to promote professionalism in the travel and tourism industry.

 

ASTA Pacific Northwest Chapter – William Hunt Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible by the ASTA Pacific Northwest Chapter, along with William and Rosemary Hunt, to encourage the pursuit of further education in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry.

 

ASTA Princess Cruises Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from Princess Cruises.

 

ASTA Simmons Scholarship

We do not have the donor history of this scholarship.

 

IATAN RONALD A. SANTANA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND:

This scholarship was established by IATAN in memory of the late Ron Santana, former IATAN Board Member, past President of the Association of Retail Travel Agents (ARTA), and travel agency Owner and Advisor. Mr. Santana was dedicated to the education of travel agents and championed that cause. This scholarship, made possible by travel agent associations and suppliers, is to help individuals who are interested in pursuing or enhancing their careers as travel and tourism or hospitality industry professionals.

NTA California Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from the California travel and tourism industry professionals.

 

NTA Canada Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from the tourism offices of all the Canadian provinces.

 

NTA Connecticut Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions organized by the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism.

 

NTA Dave Herren Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of the late Dave Herren, who was a true pioneer for United Airlines in developing packaged travel to Hawai’i. He later used his talents and innovation to help grow The Mark Travel Corporation. Dave served for many years on the Board of Trustees and was also Chairman of the National Tourism Foundation (one of Tourism Cares’ predecessor organizations). He was dedicated to supporting educational programs for young people interested in careers in the travel and tourism industry.

 

NTA Dr. Tom Anderson Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1991 in memory of Dr. Tom Anderson by his industry colleagues. He served as a member of NTA’s Board of Directors and as a tireless volunteer leader for the association and the industry.

 

NTA Eric Friedheim Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1986 by the Eric Friedheim Foundation, in memory of Eric Friedheim, who was Owner, Publisher, and Editor in Chief of Travel Agent magazine.

 

NTA Florida Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from professionals in the Florida tourism industry.

 

NTA Hawai’i – Chuck Yim Gee Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions organized by the professionals in the Hawai’i tourism industry, in honor of Chuck Yim Gee, former Dean of the University of Hawai’i School of Travel Industry Management.

 

NTA La Macchia Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2004, in honor of William E. La Macchia, the founder of The Mark Travel Corporation, at the time of his induction into the Tourism Hall of Fame.

 

NTA Luray Caverns Graduate Research Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1986 by Luray Caverns.

 

NTA Massachusetts Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from professionals in the Massachusetts tourism industry.

 

NTA New Horizons-Kathy LeTarte Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2000 by Kathy LeTarte, former President and Owner of New Horizons Tour and Travel, to support educational opportunities for travel and tourism students. The company, founded in 1986, specializes in student markets. She has volunteered in various capacities for NTA, including having served as its President.

 

NTA New Jersey Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from professionals in the New Jersey travel and tourism industry.

 

NTA New York Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions organized by Destinations of New York State.

 

NTA North America Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible by contributions from professionals in the tourism industry in 41 U. S. states.

 

NTA Ohio Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions organized by the Ohio Travel Association and the Greater Cincinnati Convention and Visitors Bureau.

 

NTA Pat & Jim Host Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from W. James Host, a lifetime benefactor of the National Tourism Foundation (one of Tourism Cares’ predecessor organizations) and his friends. In 1998, he was inducted into the National Tourism Foundation Hall of Fame (now the Tourism Hall of Fame).

 

NTA Quebec Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from Tourisme Québec, the Société des Casinos du Québec, and the Fondation Louise Dessureault.

 

NTA René Campbell – Ruth McKinney Scholarship

René Campbell, Ph.D. worked at the director level for various tourism organizations and was Executive Director of the Chapel Hill, North Carolina Convention and Visitors Bureau prior to her death in 2005. Ruth McKinney, CTP, is Co-Owner of Good Will Tours, Inc. and Owner of Land Of Ah's Motor Inn, both in Erie, KS. Both Campbell and McKinney volunteered for many years for NTA, having served on the Board of Directors and various committees. They both worked diligently with the National Tourism Foundation (one of Tourism Cares’ predecessor organizations) where each served as chair. McKinney was inducted into the National Tourism Foundation Hall of Fame (now the Tourism Hall of Fame) in 1999 and received the Bob Everidge Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. 

 

NTA Texas – Doug Harman Scholarship (in partnership with the Tarrant County College Foundation)

This scholarship was made possible through contributions organized by Dan Dipert, Sr. of Dan Dipert Tours.

 

NTA Travel Leaders Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of the following travel and tourism industry leaders: T. C. Cadena, Bill Carpenter, Weeta F. Colebank, Ron Drake, Fred Fuller, Chuck Goeldner, Richard Howell, Mary Lee, H. Neil Mecaskey, Doc Milner, Fannie Moore, Charlie Silver, Murray Vidlocker, and Charlie Williams.

 

NTA Utah – Keith Griffall Scholarship

This scholarship was made possible through contributions from professionals in the Utah tourism industry to honor Keith Griffall, Chief Executive Officer of Western Leisure.

 

NTA Yellow Ribbon Scholarship

This scholarship was established by entertainer Tony Orlando in 1993.

 

OTHER INDIVIDUAL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS:

 

Tourism Cares – Dr. William C. Wright Scholarship (in partnership with the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston)

This scholarship was made possible by the family and friends of the late Dr. William C. Wright, Professor of English Literature at the University of Houston’s English Department from 1968-1999. He created a study abroad program in 1983 that enabled students to take University of Houston classes in London, England, demonstrating his commitment to education through experience. This scholarship is intended to help empower those in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry who make this goal possible.

 

Tourism Cares - Euphoria Tourism Excellence Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Sarah Graham Mann. Sarah was a long-time faculty member at New York University's Tisch Center for Tourism Management and a consultant in tourism and nonprofit marketing and management.
